Summary

From the author of “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”。

Although best known for his short stories, Edgar Allan Poe was by nature and choice a poet。 This edition of his complete poetry illustrates the transcendent world of unity and ultimate beauty he created in his verse。 From his exquisite lyric “To Helen” to his immortal masterpieces “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells,” and “The Raven,” Poe stands beside the celebrated English Romantic poets Shelley, Byron, and Keats, and his haunting, sensuous poetic vision profoundly influenced the Victorian giants Swinburne, Tennyson, and Rossetti。

Today his dark side speaks eloquently to contemporary readers in his poems, such as “The Haunted Palace” and “The Conqueror Worm,” with their powerful images of madness and the macabre。 But even at the end of his life, Poe reached out to his art for comfort and courage, giving us in “Eldorado” a talisman to hold during our darkest moments—a timeless gift from an American writer。

With an Introduction by Jay Parini and an Afterword by April Bernard

Theres a reason these poems are still so highly regarded as of today。 Edgar Allan Poe excels at both romance and horror, which you can see across all his works, but specifically in his poetry。 I can’t see these poems ever losing their status in the world of classics。

Never would I ever have thought that a poetry book could have such a profound effect on me。 Poe is a tortured romantic soul。 His poems ooze death, loose, love and greaf。 It's true that I didn't fully understand what I was reading but I came to realise that it's all about the emotions that these poems have on you, rather than the plot itself。 I would highly recommend this to both horror fan and people trying to get into poetry, or want to read something abit different。 Never would I ever have thought that a poetry book could have such a profound effect on me。 Poe is a tortured romantic soul。 His poems ooze death, loose, love and greaf。 It's true that I didn't fully understand what I was reading but I came to realise that it's all about the emotions that these poems have on you, rather than the plot itself。 I would highly recommend this to both horror fan and people trying to get into poetry, or want to read something abit different。 。。。more

Alone"From childhood's hour I have not been As others were - I have not seen As others saw - I could not bring My passions from a common spring - From the same source I have not taken My sorrow - I could not awaken My heart to joy at the same tone - And all I lov'd - I lov'd alone。 Then - in my childhood - in the dawn From ev'ry depth of good and illThe mystery which binds me still - From the torrent, or the fountain - From the red cliff of the mountain - From the sun that round me roll Alone"From childhood's hour I have not been As others were - I have not seen As others saw - I could not bring My passions from a common spring - From the same source I have not taken My sorrow - I could not awaken My heart to joy at the same tone - And all I lov'd - I lov'd alone。 Then - in my childhood - in the dawn From ev'ry depth of good and illThe mystery which binds me still - From the torrent, or the fountain - From the red cliff of the mountain - From the sun that round me roll'd In its autumn tint of gold - From the lightning in the sky As it pass'd me flying by - From the thunder, and the storm - And the cloud that took the form (When the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view。 " 。。。more

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to。 I’m more familiar with his stories than his poetry, I thought this would be a good read to explore more of his poetry。 I did know of Annabel Lee and The Raven and loved those even more in this book。 I enjoyed other ones less familiar with me such as Bridal Ballad, Dream-Land and The Bells—the last one being a poem that I had heard of, but never read。 Some I had a bit trouble understanding naturally, but all of his poems were beautifully written。 I en I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to。 I’m more familiar with his stories than his poetry, I thought this would be a good read to explore more of his poetry。 I did know of Annabel Lee and The Raven and loved those even more in this book。 I enjoyed other ones less familiar with me such as Bridal Ballad, Dream-Land and The Bells—the last one being a poem that I had heard of, but never read。 Some I had a bit trouble understanding naturally, but all of his poems were beautifully written。 I enjoyed reading this。 。。。more

these weren’t as excellent as I was expecting, having only read “The Raven” beforehand, but everything here is still solid

Edgar Allan Poe has some amazing poems in this book。 It is a quick and easy read for anyone looking to get into poetry。

He has great rhyme and rhythm in some places, and you can tell he went through a lot of loss and it drives his poetry。 But at the same time some of his poems seemed like they had a few lines or so which were just not quite in rhythm, as if the poem could’ve done with a bit more editing… or something like that。 I liked it well enough, but it didn’t have the emotional depth that usually hooks me in poetry。 I think we just weren’t perfectly compatible。 But overall I still liked it。

I loved Poe as a dark, traumatised teenager。 After the past year and all the upsetting/ trauma the whole world went through, I decided to sit down and read not just an occasional preselected poem but his entire poetical works。 I feel like I love his works even more so but from a much different, older yet less jaded perspective。

。。。more

19th century poetry is obviously notoriously dense, and Poe is no exception。 For someone with such a spooky reputation, his poetry doesn't venture as much into horror as one would think。 That being said, it's obviously great and full of great imagery。 19th century poetry is obviously notoriously dense, and Poe is no exception。 For someone with such a spooky reputation, his poetry doesn't venture as much into horror as one would think。 That being said, it's obviously great and full of great imagery。 。。。more

I think I would’ve enjoyed this book more if I weren’t a lazy reader。 Poetry takes time to appreciate, and as much as I appreciate poetry I don’t really care to take the time to appreciate it (see what I mean, by lazy reader)。

I wish I could memorize all of Edgar Allen Poe's work so that I have access to it all the time。 This is not a quick read, you really have to dissect each poem to be able to understand the meaning。 I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I would recommend it。 I wish I could memorize all of Edgar Allen Poe's work so that I have access to it all the time。 This is not a quick read, you really have to dissect each poem to be able to understand the meaning。 I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I would recommend it。 。。。more

*3。5 starsEgar has an exquisite writing style in his poetry based on the view of my own but they came across as more 'story-like' than I would have liked。 Some of them were just a bit too long to have been a great poem and his use of language is a bit peculiar to me。 I hope to read some of his stories before making my final judgement on his work。 *3。5 starsEgar has an exquisite writing style in his poetry based on the view of my own but they came across as more 'story-like' than I would have liked。 Some of them were just a bit too long to have been a great poem and his use of language is a bit peculiar to me。 I hope to read some of his stories before making my final judgement on his work。 。。。more
